WORSHIP PREPARATION

...adapted from day 21 of the prayer handbook….

We pray for wisdom and integrity for China’s leaders as the      Olympic games get underway this week.

For the attention given to athletes and judges, to doping and drugs, to environmental threats that confront urban and rural communities and athletes.  We pray for the glories of creation across a nation rich in diversity; for communities challenged by inequalities between wealth and poverty.  Amen

Penarth Cytun – Help our Planet Topics - Topic for the month

Holidays  - too late for this year, but perhaps a good time to start

thinking about next year….

What is the problem?

The big is issue is about flying and co2 emissions-

4 people going to Australia has same impact on climate as heating a 3 bed house for 10 years

We now take flying for granted and it is hard to contemplate giving Up what are often very cheap flights

A return flight to New York produces 1.56 tonnes of CO2

Suggestions

Think about alternative   holidays – in UK perhaps.  Good ideas re green holidays on net (e.g. noflights.com)

Go by rail – Eurostar (train to Europe) produces 1/10th of co2 produced by flying

Pay for carbon offsetting.  £10 buys 1 tree which helps to offsets return flight to USA.

Very important to check out reliability of carbon offsetting companies – look for those that carry UN approved CERs (Certified emissions reductions)

Advantages to you

Thinking ‘out of the box’ about holidays may be exciting and healthier

You are making a positive contribution towards cutting carbon emissions

Having holidays in UK may be cheaper

The bible says…  You shall not pollute the land you live in (Num: 35:33)

or                           Stand still and consider the wondrous works of God (Job:37:14)

CIRCUIT PROJECT UPDATE - August 2008

We are now half way through our current circuit project to ‘Build a Nursery

in the Gambia

The plot of land was bought in August last year. Since then the well has been re-dug, the cess pit dug and thousands of bricks made for the classrooms. Many of you have seen the photographs of the first classroom ‘Shell’. However we have recently had two set backs. First of all the roof trusses were stolen from the site. Then on June 20th there was a tropical storm which affected Jamisa quite badly. 200 families were made homeless, some of whom stayed in the current nursery buildings while repairs were made. Fortunately no one was killed as it took place during the night, which made it very frightening.

The storm also badly damaged the new nursery buildings.

However the roof trusses have now been returned and building is due to recommence. We hope children may be using it early in the New Year. We have suggested that a wall be built around the plot as soon as possible to avoid other resources going missing.

A calendar for 2009 should be available to buy soon,

containing photographs from the nursery and several interesting ‘African Sayings’.

If you want to pre-order a calendar...or to borrow a CD of photographs...or to buy a GIFT IN KIND CARD…...then see Elaine

“IN TOUCH” ...the Penarth Circuit Magazine is being prepared.  For the Harvest edition, please let Brenda Hartrey have items by the end of August.  Put on those thinking caps...tell us funny stories, true stories and happenings...reports on good books you’ve read, good recipes you’ve tried, interesting plants you’ve grown, holidays you’ve had.  Tell us of hobbies and interests...of loves and hates! Give us a poem, or a quiz or something to ponder. Tell us of long lost friends you’ve become re-acquainted with; tell us of the antics of grandchildren.  If you’ve enjoyed it...then share it with us...just because it’s a church magazine doesn’t mean everything has to be religious! In fact...it there is an interesting SECULAR article, folks might fond it easier to pass on to friends outside of the church...and having read what you gave it them for….they might flick the pages and read the rest!  What a good way of evangelising and telling folks what we are about.
