Introduction….Having proclaimed his Lordship over the elements, life, evil and death in Chapter 8, Jesus now moves to begin thinking about the end of his ministry, and preparing the disciples for this. One day they will not have him with them, this must have dismayed them, but from now on he would tell them what they need to know to be his followers after he is gone. And the example he gives of true discipleship is that of a child.
READING: So now please read Luke Chapter 9
3 thoughts:
1. What is discipleship? The chapter begins with Jesus sending his disciples out on mission, welcoming them home and ends with his telling them what mission in the future will be like. These experiences were just what those early followers of Jesus did experience after Pentecost. Rejection, need, personal pain and suffering, death, and yet the call is to see and hear God through it all, and keep looking ahead, to plough straight and proclaim the Kingdom of God for all to hear.
2. The feeding of the 5000 is one of the most often quoted stories in the gospels. Many theories exist, from the purely miraculous to an example of generous sharing that spread across the crowd. That Jesus feeds us spiritually is the real point of the story, with plenty to spare. His love and care will never end.
3. A ‘mountain top experience’ is a phrase we use for a moment that is indelibly imprinted in our hearts and minds. Imagine what the 3 disciples present were thinking at that moment, and how they then had to go back to ‘normal’ life. People who become famous struggle with this, life seems humdrum afterwards, but Jesus always had his feet firmly on the ground.
PRAYER:
Lord God,
You send us out to be witnesses to you in our daily lives;
Help us to see and know that you never send us out alone,
You are always with us...every step of the way, every moment of the day.
All we need do is trust you to lead and guide us.
We need to trust that if we follow you, you will never leave us.
Amen
your thoughts:
AND NOW..
Now tell someone else what you think.
What do they think?
Chat about it!
on point:
Faith can be separated from practical action if we are not careful. Some say to be a Christian is enough, but Jesus was clear that faith must always lead to action. In meeting and helping people, in building up and sending people, in challenging and changing people, Jesus made a difference. Think about how your faith has made a difference to you, and what you have done about it. Has God stirred up anything in you to do something new? Tell someone about it. Who knows what might happen?
